30 things that make me smile

Every blog has this post. So I thought I’ll do one too. And I don’t have to think too much.

There are lots of small things around you which bring a big smile on your face, every time you encounter them. They help make our mostly mundane lives a little more interesting, a little more cheerful. Here are MY 30:

  1. Waking up from a Sunday afternoon nap to mild thunderstorms and impending rain (Time for Onion pakodas!)
  2. Encountering all green lights on your way back home.
  3. A surprise visit from a close friend
  4. Finding a new anime buddy (the passion is just contagious :D)
  5. Someone close calling you up with the sole purpose of disturbing your sleep
  6. When the songs playing from your random playlist are all your favorites and you didn’t have to skip one song
  7. SRK and Juhi Chawla in “Ek din aap yun humko mil jayenge”
  8. Meeting an old friend in a far away country (heaps of nostalgia)
  9. Receiving a text message from a friend exactly when you were about to text them
  10. When you wake up from a deep and satisfying sleep and check the time to find that its still 3 AM ( Awesome!)
  11. When your six year old niece gives you a earful when you finally visit her after 5 months
  12. Message from the bank that your salary has been credited to your account.
  13. When you wake up from sleep, power up monitor and see that every download in the overnight download queue is completed.
  14. Any of these combinations when every ingredient is just right – rice+hot sambar+ghee/ masala dosa+chutney/gulab jamun
  15. Remembering an old real life joke
  16. A friend calling/texting to say that your fav song is playing and he/she was reminded of you :)
  17. All songs from Wake up Sid (except maybe the Title song. Highly underrated album IMO)
  18. When a song you suddenly hear transports you to that phase of your life when you listened to it most (happens to me, don’t know if its common)
  19. Street musicians ( I’ve said this before, makes you feel your life is a long vacation)
  20. Sharing an umbrella
  21. A warm bear hug
  22. A perfectly situational situational song on the radio
  23. Smell of petrol (I am not running out of things to list. Its really nice! :P)
  24. Getting a letter in the mail ( hasn’t happened in a long time :( )
  25. When a baby keeps staring at you and finally smiles as if in  recognition
  26. Third Floor Tarles :)
  27. Seeing elderly people write cute, innocent comments on FB
  28. Reddit
  29. When you are reminded of a friend seeing a fictional character in a book/movie/TV series
  30. The thought of relaxing at a beach under a beach umbrella with a good book in hand and music in your ears

Okay, now this seems like a nice post to tag people. Wot say, people? :D

Oh you want to be tagged??? Great! Here you go: Rashmi, Krishna, John, Sady.  Div, Vids, Ashu head to the group blog and write there. And don’t copy from here ;)

Return of the blogger!

I apologize upfront for this post. Sorry, really. I just wanted to get back to writing. I’ll write something good next up :D.

From order to chaos…
Last 2 years have been really smooth for me. Real cozy and smooth. No speed breakers. No potholes. No nothing. Or maybe I was going so slow a speedbreaker didn’t feel like one when I encountered it. So I thought have had enough of this now. Its time to introduce some chaos. No, a lot of chaos. Muhahahahaha. And I have already taken steps towards it. Of course this was not without having endless brainstorming discussions and one-on-one gyan sessions from my myriad wellwishers.( If I am taking a decision, EVERYONE has to know before I take it). And I know some of the people involved are reading this and smiling. Yeah yeah, you smile now. But be ready to get ass-kicked if things don’t pan out as planned. But what’s the fun if things go as planned? There you go. Typical confused myself.

...And back to order
What else? Ever since I dropped my mobile while on my bike for the second time within 6 months ( and got it back by some awesome luck. I feel I expend all my luck for such stupid things and run out of it when it comes to the bigger things :)), I decided that I should get my act together and be more organized. Oh crap, I just realized the first para was about intoducing more chaos and second is about introducing more order to my life. Ah,whatever. So I am putting sticky notes on my PC, near the mirror etc. Below is a sample:

F.R.I.E.N.D.S
I have been watching random episodes of FRIENDS. And I am falling in love with the series all over again. The best quality about FRIENDS is that you can relate to the characters so much. I can assign each of the characters to my real-life friends and laugh heartily when each one acts like the other. (I am Ross :D ) You don’t get to see this other “popular” TV shows.

Movie every week!!!
The movie marathon has already began. I gather most of my friends are not even aware of what I am speaking ( I have no idea why, people have just stopped watching movies :P) but for me and Krish, the season has just begun. We are gonna watch the shit out of these movies, all the way upto August :D. Below is a list. I hope it motivates our other friends to shake off their lethargy a bit and make a move to the theatre:

22nd April – Rango
30th April – Thor
8th may – Source Code
15th may – No movie
20th May – Pirates of the Caribbean – 4
27th May – Kung Fu Panda 2
June 3 – X-Men : First Class
June 10 – Super 8
June 17th – Green Lantern
June 24th – Cars 2, Zindagi milegi na dobara
July 1st – Transformers 3
July 8th – No movie
July 15th – Harry Potter 7 – Part 2
Jul 22nd – Captain America
July 29th – Cowboys & Aliens

A Crappy Questionnaire

I prepared this questionnaire just so I could bug few of my friends here into answering these crappy questions. So tagging Rashmi, Vini, John, Krish. You can change the gender in the questions as per your preferences. Also, anyone else wants to be tagged can let me know, or need not let me know. It’s upto you. Or you can answer any of the questions in the comments too ;). Below are my responses to my own questions :

What, in your opinion, are the 5 most over-rated things in recent times?

  1. Facebook – Facebook is like marriage. You know it’s all stupid out there, but you login anyway.
  2. Beer – I tasted it only recently, and I think people only have it because its cheap.
  3. Fair Skin – I only hope mom would realize this.
  4. Katrina Kaif – She is really pretty, but I don’t find her hot. More specifically, Munni can give Sheila a run for her money.
  5. Batman – The movies are great, but I still can’t believe anyone could be a superhero with no superpowers! There is some manipulation going on there.

What 3 wishes would you ask if you stumble across a genie on the way to work? (You can only ask for material things. No unrealistic things like perfect wife/husband, world peace etc. No loopholes such as more wishes, more genies etc. No asking money :P)

  1. A  transmogrifier (transform to anyone I want)
  2. A time machine
  3. An invisibility cloak.

….Muhahahahahaha.

What is the one singular deed would you like to do if you were given a chance to go back in time? (apart from Killing Hitler and (guys)one night with Helen of Troy,Cleopatra and all other hot chicks of the past)

Zoom off to the Cretaceous Period and hitch a ride on the T-Rex,of course!!!!

Tell us 3 things you wish you knew when you turned 18.

  1. That I won’t have found my gal even when I am 26,so I better start searching NOW.
  2. ASK. If you need help,if you don’t know something,ASK. I don’t have a count of how many things I might have screwed up just because I didn’t ASK.
  3. That there will come a time when something called reality TV will become a rage and we will have to watch stuff like this and this and  I will have to brace myself for it.

What are the 3 geekiest things about you?

  1. When I think no one is watching, I extend my hand and use the force to open automatic sliding doors.
  2. I love the movie From Dusk till Dawn not because it had a semi-nude Salma Hayek dancing, but because it had zombies.
  3. If someone writes “Your such a sweet guy”, 9 out of 10 times I’ll reply back saying “You’re“,even at the risk of contradicting their statement.

Tell us 3 things that make you go “Awwww”

  1. When you see a small kid standing at the bus stop clutching his parent’s finger, watching with a stricken face, as if fervently wishing for the school bus not to come.
  2. When you see an old couple sitting on a park bench, laughing.
  3. When you have a fight with your best friend(female), and then when you patch up,she asks you,”Did you miss me?”

What are the kinds of people you are biased against, possibly unreasonably:

  1. People who plan to settle abroad
  2. People who are too finicky about spending money
  3. Oriyas – Exaggeration. I do have a couple of Oriya friends :)

What is that one lie that you absolutely intend to tell your kids?

That if you watch TV for more than half hour at a stretch, the TV will vanish in a puff of smoke and we will no longer have a TV.

What 3 words would Dusshasana have said when Krishna started supplying silk sarees to Draupadi from above? (Those tagged can change this question. Answer will remain)

A.J.M (Akkan Just miss)

Which fictional characters do you identify most with?

  1. Ross Geller from FRIENDS
  2. Harry Potter

The gal sitting on the other side of the bus is giving you the looks. What do you do?
Blush heavily, try uncomfortably to make eye contact, fail miserably, look this side and that, try again, again blush heavily..and so on.

Any FFFFUUUUUUU moment happened to you recently?

My yoga master got me into this pose and started counting from 1 to 30,slowly. 1….2…..3…By the time the count reached 30, I went FFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU…….

What song is playing in your head RIGHT NOW?
Hud hud Dabanng Dabanng Dabanng Dabanng Hud hud Dabanng…..

Crap!

Thoughts and Resolutions

I think it is only justified I warn my readers here. Below, the author has just listed few recent mundane events about his not-so-happening life, most probably because of a misplaced illusion that these events were important to his own life, and as an extension, important to others too. As if it was not enough, he has also gone ahead and made a vain attempt at philosophical ranting and brooding ( just in case the readers miss the tone). Hence, for an unsuspecting reader, considerable grave dangers lie ahead. If you are still tempted to risk this read for the sake of a slight possibility of a guilty pleasure from the morose delectation in a fellow human being’s miserable life, then go ahead and suit yourself. You have been warned.

  • Awesome bike trip to Lepakshi (130 kms from Bangalore). It was just the wide open road,me and clouds above. Peaceful. Thanks Kots for coming :). Resolution 5 trips before end of year. 1 down , 4 more to go.
  • My first Tamil movie. Someone at the theater asked which movie we have come to watch. I replied excitedly,”Endhiran” as if I have been eating Chennai-style saapad sadam all my life and am the biggest Rajni fan ever. I looked at Vini and we both started laughing. And for all those who have seen the movie,”Roboooooo” :D. Wait for my next post ;)
  • You don’t get to listen to great music these days, but there are a few sparks of brilliance here and there if you look carefully. I am talking about the soundtrack of Udaan. Its been one month and I just haven’t been able to get over it. Absolutely amazing track. Most.inspirational.album.ever. Its sad that albums like this don’t get noticed in the reels of crappy music being churned out. Similar thing happened with Luck By Chance(another awesome album and movie too) last year.
  • Its great to make new friends, always. I’m doing good at this. Resolution
Shun ego and reach out to more people.
  • I am back to my yoga routine with full gusto..err… well with whatever gusto I can manage. You don’t need any more inspiration than those hundreds of youtube videos with fit and bendy females teaching you how to be like them. (As weird as it sounds, its much better than practicing watching men with ripped bodies and huge nipples). Resolution Cut off 3 kgs by year end. Wondering if I can do it without having to run in the outside cold :D.
  • Special mention to Futurama. It started off slow but I am totally into it now .And this line never gets old : “I’m bender, baby! Pleeeease insert LIQUOR” :D
  • I went to my native place for Dasara and returned back, mostly unhurt. No major mishaps to report.
  • And the most important thing. A chain of events (which unfolded over the last few months, mind you) resulted in me going into a DETOX mode from my best friends. These people are my best friends, people who I talk to everyday, and totally cutting them off for even a few days was not easy. But then its no good to be in a comfort zone all your life. You’ll never see how things could’ve been if things are not as they are now. I feel I should’ve continued this for a while longer to see the full results, but I guess I’ve learnt my lessons.
  • On a related arrogant note, people WILL act stupid if they have to,and you have to take all this in your stride and move on. There’s a whole LIFE waiting ahead ;)

Update : I dropped my phone somewhere on the way back from office, and never got it back. RIP, Phone :P. Today I learned its always advisable to keep valuables in the bag rather than in your trouser pockets.

A Zero,One Point Five & a Six

That’s the relative boozing experience of the three 26-year-olds who entered Jimi’s beer cafe last Saturday, going by the number of beer mugs they have had all their life .Mathematically speaking, both Krish & Vini had infinitely more experience than me,so to say. A quick flashback to how it all started. Every time ‘Zero’ and ‘1.5’ passed by Jimi’s beer cafe to meet the other zeros,0.25s & 0.3s (if you discount the vodka panipuri they all had which had more paani and little vodka) at Shanti Sagar, the two would wistfully look at the Jimi Hendrix poster at the entrance and say – one day we will conquer this place. Straight out of an 80’s Bollywood movie where the mafia don stands on the edge of the rocks by the sea while staring determinedly at the Mumbai skyline through his kaleidoscopic shades and tells his future side-kick, “Ek din yeh saara sheher meri mutthi mein hoga”. So as I was saying, it all started with eating too much Pav Bhaji and Masala dosa at shanti sagar.

On the historic evening, we stepped into the cafe. We took a 6-mug(Vini) along with us because we thought it’ll be better if we have an “experienced” hand with us, even if it was only a 6-mug experience. As I went in, I felt the eyes of every drunk there glaring down upon me. Its as if they knew. As if they were all thinking “Look at this. Here comes a zero”. As it goes,5 minutes later, we were walking out of the place. Jimi’s beer cafe had nothing but beer! Only beer is just not done for us pros.We need stronger stuff. Also there was the loud music. Hurt my eardrums. What do kids listen to these days! We quietly hopped to Enigma nearby.

After a round of intense speculation and brooding on boodyweiser (Thats what Krish said!), foster and other options, we ordered 330 ml of beers. 6-mug pro haughtily said “330 ml is nothing” and ordered another vodka for himself. The beers came quickly, I took the beer in my hand, heard myself say “You are straying from the path of Dharma, you $#@@#$”, ignored it,said cheers and took a sip. No surprises there. It tasted awful.Vini’s vodka cocktail was much better. Having finished the beer with the help of masala peanuts, I waited for the sensation to kick-in. Nothing happened. Zero mug dutifully raised this query to 6-mug. 6-mug smugly replied “Ha ha,nothing will happen with only this much.Take something more”.”Damn!”. 1.5 mug chipped in as enthusiastic as ever, “Pavan, rum order madona,BY-TWO!”. Ordering by two’s, two by five’s,three by seven’s.The side-effects of having too much coffee at Shanti Sagar. The rum arrived, and it actually tasted good, probably because it was a cocktail, again. Come to think of it now,the addictive influence of alcohol seems totally wasted on us guys. The rum got over too, and we sat there waiting for some fantastic feeling to blow our minds or whatever they call it. And we just sat staring at each other’s faces.Nothing happened. The three mugs were like “Isn’t this supposed to be good enough for a high? Do we need to drink more of this?Should we order something more, and share it, by three?” . Eventually we just paid the bill and walked out, giving each other tough looks and thinking in general “Meh.Seems like I’m too tough for this stupid alcohol have any effect on me”. The truth is that the zero mug & the 1.5 mug had no frigging clue if they were doing this right or not.  And the 6-mug was after all a 6-mug; he didn’t know shit either. And that’s how our night of WIN and LAME ended. But I did keep my promise I had made to a fellow zero-mug on my last birthday. I msg’ed him, “I did it!”
